Optimism

Optimism

Because we live in an ever changing world, where our balance can be thrown off without a moment’s notice, it is important to rely on those things that we can control.  The way in which we view difficult times, difficult people and difficult circumstances offers two varying roads from which we must choose.  If we choose to fall prey to any one of those aforementioned, the destination of joy will be nearly impossible to achieve, but if we instead choose to forgo the negative mindset and allow ourselves to focus on what is possible, what is within our control and what we choose to feel, then we can choose optimism.

Optimism is defined as a positive attitude towards the general future, or towards a particular outcome.  It is the way in which one shapes their mental outlook that allows one to see new things as options or opportunities.  Life transitions, for example, are seen as experiences for improvement, pitfalls as lessons learned that are temporary, and challenges as circumstances that one can acquire knowledge.

There are benefits that one can achieve with an optimistic outlook.  Difficult times and challenges are seen with a renewed confidence and a mind that can troubleshoot.  Those that are optimistic people hold the ability to see the positive in any situation encountered.  Thus, even when things fail to pan out as planned, they can still view it through a positive perspective.  As time moves on, this outlook can alleviate and lower stress levels and offer improvements in one’s mental health.

When you are an optimist, you have an increased likelihood of taking control of situations, rather than allowing the situation to take control of you.  This will give you enhanced power over your life as well as what occurs in your lifetime.  It can also mitigate depression and anxiety.

Unfortunate and bad things will still happen in life.  When something bad does happen, however, the optimist is less likely than its pessimistic counterparts, to attack others or blame themselves for what has unfortunately happened.  Rather than focusing on the negative emotions they might experience, they will instead look for ways to improve the outcome the next time.

Some will argue that you must be realistic.  Having an optimistic outlook is not a cure.  Regardless of how much you try to hold a positive attitude, bad things will still happen.  But, if you can shift your thinking to focus your thoughts with greater emphasis on the good, rather than the bad, you are more likely to be healthier and happier throughout your life.

A mind that is focused on optimism is likely more physically active.  You tend to view the world as an enjoyable place, and one where there is always something to be appreciated and enjoyed.  You are alert and refreshed, noticing that which is beautiful and it even piques your interest, causing you to want to get out and experience life and explore.  There is greater likelihood that you will get outside and walk, hike and explore, which equates to increased exercise.

When you have a strong belief in positivity, and you believe that an active life is a healthier and happier life, exercise will be seen as good and fun.  It is much easier to exercise with regularity when you view fitness as something positive in your life.  It is better to view it that way rather than holding a mindset that it is a struggle and you do it only now and then.

Optimism can also be instrumental in cognitive function improvements.  It naturally happens when you maintain an optimistic outlook.  Memory and cognitive function are enhanced and you will be more likely to engage in positive behaviors that maintain that brain health.  Attention and focus are also more likely to be improved.  You tend to pay more attention to those things you find actually matter to you, and less disturbed by those things that do not matter.  The retention of new material that is learned will become easier.
