AFFIRMATIONS

Affirmations are utilized for many purposes.  From a general sense, they are used to work with and reprogram the subconscious mind, to set an encouraging tone for us to believe various positive things about ourselves, or even the world in which we live and defining our place in this world.  Affirmations are also instrumental in supporting us to create the type of reality we desire.  The areas in which we can make, or also attract, are typically areas like love, financial abundance, happiness and beauty.

To understand the importance of the role the subconscious plays helps to better grasp the adoption of affirmations into our everyday lives.  The subconscious is a major player in the positive actualization, or reality, of one's life as well as the fulfillment of what is desired.  The things we believe about ourselves at the level of our subconscious can have a large effect on the way events play out.  The impact of this is compelling.

Looking at the most basic level, when we are in a good place with ourselves and our self-esteem is where it should be, with an attitude that is positive, the outcome is that our lives run with smoothness.  The idea of the “law of attraction” suggests that this is the raising of one's vibration in such a way that when the vibration is positive, then positive things like the love we desire and the wealth and health will magnetically be attracted to us.  This is how the relationship for this law is put into effect.

This same power is also powerful, yet on the reverse.  If someone feels negative about themselves and holds a negative attitude, the outcome is often behaviors that are rather self-defeating.  Those type of behaviors are going to impact and cause negative outcomes that are not what is desired.  Examples would be unwanted bad health like chronic or acute illnesses, financial blunders and drama with those that surround you.

A deeper look of understanding affirmations requires a complete investigation of what an affirmation is.  They are created with the purpose of promoting self-change in the person that is adopting them into their lives.  They can be a basic reminder, or even more of an inspiration.  Additionally, they can redirect one's focus on goal striving throughout the day.  This activity alone has all the potential of advancing both positive and consistent change within one's self.

Simply put, the formula for writing an effective affirmation is to begin with the perspective of first person.  The statement should begin with either “I” or “I am”.  The power of this beginning allows the affirmation to be transformed into a strong statement of identity.  That alone serves as a basis for motivating self-change.  Some examples are “I am confident in my abilities and I trust myself.”  Another example would be “I find joy in making healthy food choices and consistent exercise.”

The affirmation must also come from a positive perspective.  Unfortunately, the brain does not register a “not” in a sentence, thus saying “I am not in debt” could be counterproductive as the brain hears, “I am in debt.”  Speaking positively, a better choice would be to state “I am living in financial abundance.”

There must be some sort of emotional charge placed into the affirmation.  By giving your statement some feeling, there is a deeper association with somatic experiences and words that have emotion.  Instead of saying, “I make a regular commitment to go to the gym” which might sound as though it is a chore, try saying, “I enjoy and look forward to working out.”

The final area to consider when making affirmations is to write them in the present tense.  Despite it being something you hope to draw into your life, speak as though it is already happening.  Instead of saying, “I will find love” say something present like, “I am surrounded by love”.  Another idea would be instead of “When I fit into my jeans that have been hanging in the closet, I will be both beautiful and confident” say “I am beautiful and confident”.  While it may feel rather silly to accentuate that which you are looking to have in your life, it is crucial that it is spoken in the present.  The purpose behind affirmations is the rewriting of the subconscious mind.
